Re: Becca's "-Isms"

In Becca's post she asked: does ethical vegetarianism require its subscribers to abstain from eating eggs and dairy from factory farms? Why or why not? What do you think of red meat vegetarians and pescatarians. Do they have any merit?

Technically, vegetarianism does not require one to only purchase eggs and dairy products that are cruelty-free. Although, they should try their best to abstain from anything that has to do with factory farming. Yet, on the other hand they are making a huge contribution already by not eating meat, so why should they be limited even more? Everyone should only eat eggs and dairy from local farms but that is not always an option. Vegetarians should not be singled out in their efforts to make a change, everyone is just as responsible as they are.

The fact that someone told you that they are a pescatarian for moral reasons makes a lot of sense to me. Since factory farms are so harmful to the environment, a lot of environmentalists, including one that I know, are pescatarians. The person I know claims that he cares about the environment, but not animals. (Not every pescatarian feels this way). Being a pescatarian allows one to be environmentally friendly, while still consuming meat. Also, fish live a normal, free life up until the time that they are reeled in. These animals are not stuck in a cage all their life and have minimal suffering.

As for red meat vegetarians, they probably deserve a little less merit. I really like how you said the term merit. It is a sort of badge or insignia that one should be proud of if they are a vegetarian. Over the summer I had a friend who told me she was a vegetarian. One day, I was astonished to have her sit next to me eating what was clearly chicken. This was our conversation:

" I thought you were a vegetarian?"

"I am, but I eat chicken."

"Well, you're not a vegetarian then, you are a selective omnivore."

"People don't know what that is, and it is just easier to say 'I'm a vegetarian.' "

That comment really bothered me, especially how this girl made an effort to mention that she was a vegetarian whenever she could. I told her that she was falsely labeling herself and taking credit for something that she was not. The discussion went on.

I myself only eat chicken, yet would never say, "I'm a vegetarian" just because it is more convenient or I am worried that someone might not know what I mean. People who only eat chicken do deserve some merit, but certainly not to the extent that full out vegetarians do. They deserve this because they are avoiding meat to an extent. The typical person in our society eats fish, beef, pork, chicken and sometimes deer. So 3 out of four or five isn't that bad. Here is my reasoning for choosing chicken as my only meat source:

Pigs are very intelligent, they are more intelligent than dogs. I do not want to eat the smartest animal on the farm. Cows and other livestock contribute pollution to the environment more than any other source. And fish, I just don't find them appetizing.

Why should someone subside from all types of meat? In my view any absence helps. One less steak bought is one less cow killed. I do not understand why it has to be as extreme as you either have to eat all animals or none. I guess I really like chicken because it tastes so good and it is really difficult to give it up. So I figure if I cannot give up chicken and be happy, then I should limit myself to the amount of chicken I consume and give up all other animal sources. If everyone just choose one or two different meat sources and limited themselves to the amount of those animals then a lot less animals would be killed.

Question: For all of the non-vegetarians out there, do you think that it is possible to choose one meat source and be happy with how your diet affects you?

A Taste For Vegetarianism

Taste, a sense that tells us if we enjoy or do not enjoy a certain type of food or drink. This opinion in result, determines what we prefer to consume. In class today it dawned on me that no matter what the excuse for not being a vegetarian (not that you need an excuse) it all comes down to taste. No matter how busy someone is, what someones religion is, or how strong the peer pressure is, if they didn't like how meat tasted they wouldn't eat it. My argument is that the main reason why it is hard to be a vegetarian is because people enjoy the way meat tastes. Any other argument is an excuse, cover-up reason, or a reason that would not be valid unless the person liked the way meat tasted.
I have a hard time comprehending the argument that, someone is too busy to be a vegetarian. There are many foods you do not have to cook, and meat is not one of them. It takes a lot of time to make a meal with meat in it. People who are really busy live off of granola bars and protein shakes. If you did not enjoy the way meat tasted you would be able to find time to think of alternative options.
Some religions justify the consumption of meat. Yet, those religions do not say that you have to eat meat. If you did not enjoy meat, it would not be against your religion not to eat meat.
The Peer pressure argument, is not valid by itself, it is difficult to not be influenced by your friend's food choices only if you liked them in the first place. Say for example, you and some of your friends go to another one of your friend's house. Your friend, whose house you went over just made Brussels sprouts. Hypothetically, you hate Brussels sprouts, the thought of eating them makes you sick inside. All of your friends like them and are enjoying them together.
Now let's say the situation above is the same except instead of Brussels sprouts it is pot roast. In this situation you are a new vegetarian and have not eaten meat in a month. This pot roast smells amazing, and your friend asks you if you want some and you say no. All of your other friends say yes, and you are sitting there watching everyone eat what you cannot have. Finally, you cave and have a little bit.
The fact that your friends were eating Brussels sprouts does not change the appeal of Brussels sprouts. Yet, the fact that they are eating pot roast does change the appeal. It is easy to subside from eating meat to a new vegetarian, or at least easier when influence is not around. Yet, when around others who eat meat it is difficult because they are reminded of how good it tastes. Peer pressure would not be a factor if they did not enjoy what was being persuaded. Just like someone who is on a diet and gives in when they see their friends eating a fresh batch of cookies. They could of easily avoided abstaining from eating cookies if they did not see their friends eating them. Out of sight, out of mind!
. Eating something that tastes good is reinforcing. Ceding to continue what is reinforcing is not always the easiest thing to do. In the hypothetical situations, it wasn't the pressure that was "too much" it was your will power that was not enough or the reinforcing feeling was too strong.

Question: Can you think of a reason for not being a vegatarian that does not have anything to do with taste preference? It may be hidden, I challenge you.

A Response to David Morton

David Morton's article, Some Ethical Issues in Biotechnology Involving Animals, he brings up some interesting, and some fallacious points. His last statment in his article was this, "The question is, should we do it, Or even start to research it? And what does it say about humans if we do?"

What does it say about humans if we do? That's pretty deep. What does it say? Human's love to learn and make technological advancements. We question everything, it is what makes us human. Why? How? Those three -letter words drive us to do many things. Oh, curiosity. We want to find a cure for cancer and researchers use many animals to figure this out. But, what about changing the genes of a sheep so that their lungs will be human lungs, so that when an emphysemic patient needs a transplant their is one available? The life of that sheep was created solely for the purpose of developing those lungs. No offesense, but why should a sheep donate their human lungs just so that someone can smoke cigarettes all their life? What does that say about humans? Surely, I do not think that is what God intended, if someone is using that argument.
Perhaps transgensis shows how much humans put other human's well-being over anything else.
But in certain situations you have to think about the well-being of the animal over humans, like with the emphysema example. When we were on the topic of animal experimentation the comment that a lot of the experiments with animals do not translate to humans was made. I think that transgensis should only be used for experiments where the results from an experiment will not translate to humans unless the organs or tissues are human organs and tissues, and the results have a greaqter purpose than color of fish scales. Of course not many people can disagree with the utilitarian point of veiw. Experiments should not be for human aethetics.
Question: What do you think the use of biotechnology and transgensis says about humans?

Response to Max 12/10/10

Are there apparent limitations with this? I've done the quantifying (but there may be more human measures to ascertain), but what about the installation of these procedures?

Grades are a measure of how smart one is. Income is a measure of success. Statistics, numbers, symbols, lines on a graph, and labels are used to measure all types of things. Smart people do not necessarily always get good grades. The fact that someone is labeled as lower class does not mean that they are unsuccessful. If we had someway of measuring the ethicacy of the use of biotechnology on animals, what would it matter? In Max's senerio, the fact that a researcher is purposely inflicting pain on an animal in order to get this data in the first place is completely against research ethics. No EEG, z-score, t-test, quasi-experimental design, or hedonistic calculus is a sufficient way to measure suffering units. What would the numbers really tell us? Numbers do not change anything. When a biotechnologist thinks that changing the organs and tissues of livestock will greatly benefit humans, they will find a way to justify it no matter what the majority of people think is right or what the level of suffering units will be. So thinking of a way to measure the ethicacy of biotechnology seems useless to me.

Questions: Who decides if an experiment should or should not be carried out? (playing devil's advocate) On what grounds do philosopher's have a right to prevent future advancements in medicine?

Re: Bryan 12/4/10

In Bryan's latest post he asked, "What do you think about the role religion should play in the treatment of animals?"

It seems like most people in class feel as though religion should not play a role in the treatment of animals. Yet, I disagree. Religion is what people who are religious look to when determining what is ethically wrong or right. The constitution and the beginning laws of our country were based off of religion. This is true with many other cultures. Where do our morals come from, that is, what external sources? Laws, religion and culture. If we look to the bible for how to live our lives and how to treat others, then why is it so obscure to look to the same source for how to treat animals?

I think religion should play a role in the treatment of animals if you are a religious person. My family justifies their meat-eating alone on, "that's why God made them, for us to eat." Besides this reason there is no other justification for meat eating. "it tastes good" is simply not sufficient enough for me. Yet, if your religion justifies it, then it is okay.

The reason why no one brought up religion in reference to the treatment of animals in zoos or as pets is because it is not relevant. The bible says nothing about zoos, yet one could argue that when there is an endangered species that a Noah's Arc situation (one male, one female) is pronounced okay. Yet, that is not really saying much about the ethicacy of zoos. I really do not think that the bible says anything about pet keep either.

The bible does state to treat every creature kindly, whether that is explicit or not. If we were to use the bible as a reference for animal treatment law, I do not see the animals being treated worse than they are currently being treated.

Question: If the bible was used to create new animals treatment laws, would the treatment of animals become better or worse?

Animals as symbols in religion

In many religions animals symbolize certain things. For the christian religion:

The Lamb is an important symbol. John has phrases including "my sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they will follow me." (John 10:27) . During passover blood from the lamb was marked on the doors to prevent the "angel of death" from entering their homes. In Jerusalem lambs were made as daily sacrifices for the sins of others.
Jesus is called, "the Lamb of God" in John 1:29 and 1:36. The Lamb of God refers to Jesus as a sacrifice for sins. The bible seems to support the act of eating lambs if we were to spiritually interpret it. Because from a spiritual interpretation it would seem that eating a lamb would cleanse one's sins.

Around Christmas time, two doves are cadged in church. This is in the catholic religion, but I'm not sure if other Christians have this as well. These doves symbolizes the new and old testaments. The song "The twelve days of Christmas" has other animals that symbolize different things in the christian religion. These symbols were created because from the mid 16th to the early 19th century being Catholic was illegal in England. The twelve days of Christmas was a catechism song for those being confirmed, the code prevented them from being caught. A partrige in a pear tree symbolizes Jesus, three french hens symbolize the thological virtues- faith, hope, charity, four calling birds represents the four Gospels, six geese means the six days of creation, and seven swans symolize the seven sacrements. http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/music/12days.asp

These are only some of the things that animals symbolize in the christian religion. My questions are: What are some things that animals symbolize in other religions/cultures? How may the use of these symbols justify or not support the consumtion of these animals?

Re: Todd's Epstein Goes to Extremes

In Todd's latest post in response to Richard Epstein's article, he asked "Do you believe that animals can have freedom and liberty, even if we still utilize their resources and their labor?"
First I want to point out that I found this a very intriguing question. Yet, in order to answer it I want to first, list all human utilization of animals. Secondly, define freedom and liberty. And finally, determine if each utilization allows animals to be free and obtain liberty.
We use animals for many things, some more necessary than others. We use them for medical resources, as pets, modes of transportation, clothing/upholstery, zoo/aquarium attractions, farm hands, and food.
Freedom is, "The absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice of action." And liberty is, " The power to do as one pleases." (Both as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Essentially, they mean the same thing.
For clothing/upholstery and food, the animal of course has no freedom or liberty because it's dead. (I apologize for my bluntness.) Yet, for the other conditions freedom and liberty is questionable. In a medical testing facility, the animals are free to do what they please when they are in their cage... as long as they are in their cage. Oh the abundance of choices. They are not free or at liberty to say if they do or do not want to be a part of an experiment. At times, I'm sure, They have to be held down or forced to participate.
For pets, their actions are limited to the dos and don't of their owners, they technically have less freedom than cows or any other farm animal in my opinion.
As for animals that are on the farm, (that serve as Farm hands, potential food, or transpiration) and animals that are in the aquarium or zoo their freedom and liberty is a bit more complex. They are free to roam and do as they please without constraint as long as they are inside the gates and walls that bind them. Their choices of actions are limited to this space and if they were to try to escape, they would be restrained from that decision. Yet, as long as they do not try to do that it appears as though they have liberty and freedom, at least to them.

Question: Are humans even free? Who has more freedom wild animals or humans?

The psychology of dolls

I was told that in my absence on Monday the subject of the psychology of dolls came up. Well, I'm not quiet sure what the question was, but I can give some psychological insight on dolls.

Girls are to dolls what boys are to guns. A lot of young boys go through a "gun phase" when they are younger (sadly some never grow out of it). It is a pretty big psychological debate whether or not to let young boys have fake toys guns or to take them away. On the female side, young girls are attracted to dolls because they offer them the ability to show nurturance. The idea that females have an innate need to care for others makes sense from an evolutionary point of view. Being nurturing is a trait that women have needed to possess. It was the wife who stayed home and raised her children and the husband who "brought home the bacon," so to say. This is still widely prevalent today. This is something that has been a part of human culture since the cave. It also explains the gun phase in boys, while it is no longer necessary for men to hunt and cavemen didn't have the technology, hunting still went on for quite a while in human history.

Dolls can also have a negative light to them. Barbie, is supposed to be this perfect women that girls want to be just like when they are older. Yet, studies have shown that barbie is linked to eating disorders in some women. A doll symbolizes not only nurturance, but beauty as well. I'd say that infant/baby dolls symbolize nurturance. Yet, barbie and other "teen" or "women" dolls act as a form of manifestation. Some girls pretend that they are these dolls and that they look just as beautiful as the unperceivably disproportional Barbie. Yet, dolls are not the only thing that shape our thoughts on what beauty is. Disney movies also have a huge impact. Belle, Cinderella, Snow white, Sleeping beauty, etc. they all look the same essentially. High cheek bones, clear completions, slim athletic bodies, small pert noses, big eyes, and full lips! (I'll stop there.) Society plays a huge role on this idea, the media and Barbie are just some factors, yet, every day life is the biggest factor of them all.

The fact that taking care of dolls and nurturing others is an innate trait in women and letting them have stuffed animals or dolls is not going to have a huge impact on how they treat animals. I think of it in terms of: If they are a nurturing person they will be nurturing to dolls, stuffed animals and pets.

Question: How does society shape the way we treat animals? How could society better improve this? How does society shape the way we treat eachother?

Response to Mary

Mary asked, "If people were to stop keeping pets, what would the effect of society be as well as the animal world?"
Something that I do not think that we have touched on yet, are the health benefits of owning animals. People who own dogs and cats are less likely to have: heart problems, depression, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high triglyceride, stress, among many other benifits.
So naturally, if people stopped owning pets the rates of these disorders would rise
For the animal world, the effects to fish, snakes and cats would not change at all. Yet, for dogs, it would change immensely. Like we have been discussing in class, and like Mary discussed in her post, dogs have been domesticated so much that they would not be able to survive on their own. We change them to have shorter legs, longer torsos, rounder snouts. We desire these traits because they are more aesthetically pleasing to us, or these traits are quite possibly desired because they are more human (a manipulated selection that is a borderline satire of The Island of Dr. Moreau). Our extreme breeding choices for these animals has given dog owners the opportunity to turn something that is suppose to be a nurturing act into a real life Cosmo quiz: What dog are you.
Dogs need us for their survival, and if all the dogs were dispersed in the woods, I'm sure some of them would survive. (probably not shitus or chuwuwas). Never the less, both the human world and dog would would have significant changes, because they are so intertwined.

Question: Because animals give us so many health benifits does that give us a reason to breed dogs so that there is at a right dog for everyone's lifestlye? That is to say, different dogs are specifically designed for a certain lifestyle.

People who look like their dogs

Today in class Nick brought up the theory of developmental attraction. Another theory, that realates to this topic is the reward-theory of attraction. We are attracted to the things that reward us. These aren't tangible rewards, but internal rewards. For example, we are attracted to people that agree with us beacuse it reinforces our opinions.
This relates to pet ownership (dog owner ship in particular) because the reward-theory of attraction effects the dogs we choose to own. It has been proven empiclly that people look like their dogs. This is because we are attracted to what we look like, even unconsiously because it rewards us. In one study researchers gathered 70 people to match pictures of dogs to owners. The participants were given 41 pictures of real-life owners and for each they were given a choice of three different dog breeds to choose from. Chance indicates that they would be right 33% of the time, but the results showed that the participants were correct from 50-60% of the time. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/5094835/Dog-owners-do-look-like-their-pets-say-psychologists.htmlsts.html).
The researchers also looked for personality similarities, yet found no such correlation.

Yet, People choose their dog breeds for all types of reasons. I do not think that I look like my dog at all. Personally, I like bigger dogs: golden retrivers, labs, and border collies (I own a yellow lab). I like them the most because they appeal the most to me asethtically and personallity wise. These types of dogs are smart, energenic and just want to be loved.

1. If you own a dog what made you choose that breed?
2.Do you think that you look like your dog?

Animal pedagody

On Friday, we brought up the new topic of zoos, and discussed how zoos serve a pedagogical function. Sarah mentioned, that we don't really need to learn about wild animals and that we should just leave them alone. Do we need to learn from animals? Do we have the right to take them out of the wild?
Having a pet teaches you how to care for another being, and it also teaches responsibilities. We use various animals for researching which is a necessary tool for new treatments and medications. Zoos give a real life look at, for what a lot of people, will be the closest they ever come to seeing a real-life exotic animal. Animals are a huge part of our world and teach us so much, we do need to learn about them. In some aspects, humans think they own every animal (and thing). I do not think that this is intentional, but our thirst for knowledge blinds us.

Question: Yet, do we have the right to cage animals for our viewing? Where is the line between curiosity and taking away rights?

Re: Becca Lindamood's Hunting v. Stop and Shop

At the end of Becca's latest post she asked what the world would be like if everyone was required to kill their own meat?

Well, first my response was that the rate would go down dramatically. Yet, then I thought, let's think realistically here. In order to answer this correctly I first have to imply that this is regulated by law -- purchasing meat from industries or small farms is illegal. In that case, I think it would not change at all. People would buy meat from the black market or from small farms anyways.
If, just for hypothetical reasons, we didn't live in a society where people do things even though they are illegal, the rate of meat consumption would go down. This is due to the fact that some people cannot afford weapons and also due to the fact that some people would feel wrong killing an animal. Although, I do think the crime rate may increase because more people would own weapons and would have to know how to use them. When asked a "what if " question it is difficult to say what would truly happen or how the population will react. And as we know from the Prohibition act in the 1920's if people want something that is illegal they will find a way to get it. In the case of hunting, people will get what they want even if that requires someone else to do their dirty work for them.
From an environmental standpoint, there would be an abundance of extra farm animals. I would say that farmers would have to keep their animals and not breed them. If they let them out into the wilderness it would throw off the entire food chain. The amount of foxes, coyotes, wolfs and other natural predators would increase. This would make other things go off course. A realistic chain reaction.

People's schedules are so busy, with working and raising children. Most people do not have time to go out on an all day excursion killing a buck. If it became illegal, this law will be short lived because of this. Do you have time to do this? I surly don't.

Question: what do you think the effects of a vegetarian world would be if we gradually worked towards it? Is it possible?

re: Isa 10/29/10

This is a response to Isa's question," Do you think that our nature as humans has grown into something that may be uncontrollable if not regulated?"

In Isa's post and comment in class yesterday, she talked about the status of owning diamonds and pearls is like the status of owning a buck head on your wall. The words "power, money, and status" all come to mind when talking about trophy hunting (a whole new meaning to 'PMS'). When it comes to killing animals and mounting them on the wall or making rugs out of them that is power. I killed this animal and I am going to show it off. I wouldn't call this status, because the person is showing pride in the fact that they dominate the animal they killed. Wearing a fur coat, or a mink boa is a symbol of having money just like owning diamonds and pearls. Your status is determined by how much money and power you have. I think that it is in our nature to want to obtain the highest status possible.
It's not our nature as individual humans but our nature as a society that has made us believe in this appeal to vanity. Since owning a fur coat and the like are not things that everyone can afford, the amount you own does not need to be regulated. The amount of deers that are hunted, or any other animal that is, needs to be regulated because the population will be at risk for the hunted species.
There is an up side to a small amount of hunting though. When deers are over populated there are a lot of car accidents where they die and cars get completely totaled. I've heard several first hand account stories from friends and relatives. When a deer dies from a car accident, I'm pretty sure that in this country, it doesn't get eaten. I'm not saying that we might as well hunt them because they a going to die anyways from cars, I'm just pointing out that there are less car accidents when the population is under control.

Questions: What are other countries traditions for road kill? How does this compare with America's? What should change about our system or other countries?

Vegatarian V. Ego Defense Mechanism

On Friday Alex spoke about a billboard supporting meat eating and then asked why people were so threatened by vegetarianism. I replied by saying, "People come up with those ignorant sayings because they feel the need to rudely over justify their meat eating so that they can protect their egos." In further inspection of the topic, I found that this situation, does in fact, resembles a certain type of ego defense mechanism. In psychology courses they only teach you the ten Freudian ego defense mechanisms, yet there are others. I won't go into detail about all of the others but I will mention that they are typically divided into three categories: primitive; less primitive, more mature; and mature defense mechanisms.
Among the primitive defense mechanisms is "acting out." The man and the billboard would fall underneath this category. Acting out is preforming an action (puting up a meat eating billboard) instead of feeling the related emotion. People who are defensive have a hard time facing their shortcomings. Instead of excepting other's opinions they fight fire with fire.
Some individuals, feel threatened by vegetarianism because they are at risk for feeling guilty for something that they have been taught is okay their whole lives. An individual does not want to admit that they are a bad person for advocating the death and torture of another being for their own earthly use. In order to refrain from such feelings, they go to the extreme with excuses such as: "That's why God put them here," "PETA is just exaggerating, the animals don't really go through all that suffering," and, "Everybody else eats meat, so it's okay." By instantly dismissing the ethical aspects of meat-eating with excuses, the feelings of guilt are not felt.

Question: Is there a psychological aspect to eating meat and testing on animals? Perhaps cynical?

Re: Emily's Food and Morality

Emily made a really good point about society labeling people and people labeling themselves based on what they eat. In a part of her blog she mentioned how people will say, "I had chocolate last night, I was so bad." This really hits the nail on the head because it's so true; I never thought of it that way before. She ends her post by asking, "Why are people 'good' or 'bad' based on what they eat?"

Now I'm going to use a little bit of logic by saying the word "bad" is ambiguous, in this dispute "bad" means unhealthy or morally wrong.
The saying goes, "you are what you eat." To some extent I think this is true, the foods we eat determine how healthy we are. The foods we eat even effect our mental functioning to some extent. When people say that they were bad for eating chocolate they mean it in a health sense-- they ate something "bad" for them. So in this context they are not assigning morality to the food. The people who eat the chocolate do not feel morally bad, they feel unhealthy.

When it comes down to the moral implications of eating meat that's a bit more tricky. Are we (morally) bad for eating meat? Well, this depends on what your morals are. If your morals tell you that you should not eat meat, then it is morally wrong to eat meat. If your morals justify consuming animals, then it is not morally wrong to eat meat. We cannot control our morals nor can we force morals upon someone. Laws and society shape our morals, we are taught that stealing is wrong and killing another person is wrong. Since consuming flesh is well accepted in our culture, our moral responsibility is up to us when it comes to the consumtion of animals.

We cannot control how these animals are being treated, and we certainly do not advocate their suffering, but is it our responsibility to feel morally wrong? The blame really should be on these industries and supermarkets. I have tried to find free-range poultry in grocery stores, but the selection is simply not there. So purchasing Purdue and other factory farm suppliers is the only option. It is different if there is a free-range option, but there isn't. Society has nothing to do with how those animals are treated, it is the corporations decision to do these things so that they will make more money.

Animal experimentation is a different story however. Yes, it is the corporations fault for testing on animals, but there are plenty of other options. These alternate options are easy to access and do the same thing, they are just a different brand. These products cost just as much as the products that are tested on animals. We should feel more morally obligated to not use animal tested products for these reasons. To me, it is worse to use products that were tested on animals than to consume animals, because it's so easy and people have no excuse. Yet, like I said before, we cannot control our morals, nor force morals upon someone else.

My questions: Should we spend our time and energy trying to reinstate animal cruelty laws against the politics of factory farms and animal testing, rather than promoting vegetarianism? Do they both have their place?

Animal Testing

Below (in two separate blog posts) I have listed companies that do and do not test on animals. These are PETA's complete lists of companies that are not required by law to test. These include companies that produce cosmetics, personal care products and domestic cleaning products.

Going over the ethics of whether testing is ethical or not for pharmaceutical and new treatment reasons is a tiresome task. This has value behind it and it is done with intention of helping others. In some light I can understand why they would test personal care and cosmetics on animals before putting it on the market (I will later elaborate). Make-up and soaps could cause people to break out, or give them hives. But household cleaning products?

Test Pinesol on floors? Test Lysol on counters? Test Febreze in the air? No, let's test them on animals. The defense may be that the fumes are at risk to poison you when you are cleaning, but why not use the knowledge of chemistry to our advantage? We know we do not need to put arson in our cleaning products -- a hopefully well established fact.

Arm and Hammer is listed on products that test on animals. Arm and Hammer is mainly known for baking powder/soda. Baking powder is quite a versatile substance. You can eat it, you can brush your teeth with it, you can clean with it, you can freshen your fridge with it, as well as other things I'm sure. It's versatility is due to it's low, basic pH. This is a scientific fact-- we know that it is safe to use. Yet, if we know it's safe why do we still test it on animals? Why fix something that obviously is not broken. You can do practically anything with baking powder, it does not need improvements. Testing it is a waste of time, energy, and animals.

New cosmetic products come out every once in a while. When they do, advertisements for new mascara's that make your eye lashes 'even longer' parade television commercials. Concealers and foundations that match to your exact skin tone take up several magazine pages. Shampoos that are created just for long hair, or short hair, or curly hair, or fizzy hair have just started coming out (in stores, not necessarily salons) over the past few years, making it seem like they all do not do the same thing -- clean your hair. Like it really makes a difference. All of this just for, what seems to me, some marketing ploy? I can understand companies testing on animals in the beginning, but once you have an effective product that makes you money why do you need to continue testing? Because other companies are doing it and if they do not keep up with them, then they won't make as much money.

As I mentioned before drug testing and new medical treatments are required by law and they have good intention behind their actions. Yet, cosmetics, personal-care products, and house-hold cleaning products do not need to be tested on animals. Newly created make-up and other personal care products are tested every day. Drugs are for our health, yet, cosmetics and some personal care products are for our appearance. Animal testing in these areas are driven by the consumer's need to be beautiful. Is this the price we must pay to be beautiful?

My question is: Why do you think that companies (that are not required by law to test) test their products on animals?
